International Day of the Girl
Did you know that October 11th was “International Day of the GIRL?? In 2012 the United Nations declared October 11th as the International Day of the Girl Child. This day serves to promote girls’ human rights, address forms of abuse and discrimination girls across the globe suffer from, and gender inequalities that exist between girls and boys. It’s a day when activist groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere. It’s a movement. This year’s theme is “Empowering adolescent girls: Ending the cycle of violence. So how did some of the girls from around the world acknowledge and empower girls all over the world?? Well lets see…
Girls from all over the world came together to honor one another and join in to spread awareness about issues that effected us. Being a girl myself I wanted to spend the day educating myself more about girls abroad and issues that they faced on a daily. Its one thing to have a bad hair and think your world is over then there is knowing that you cannot attend school simply because you are a girl. Knowing that because you are a girl in many countries that you live in fear of one day being married off before you are even a woman.
Becoming aware and educating ourselves is the number one thing we can do as girls especially American girls. When we learn about how people live abroad and gain understanding and not cast judgment we can appreciate and begin to help girls everywhere. So if you simply posted a fact about girls or participated in the selfie challenge for #aDayOfTheGirl you were able to join in and help raise awareness. “A day of the Girl” is not just one day but it is a step for people everywhere to become more knowledgeable about girl issues everywhere.
