Jada Pinkett Smith speaks on Oscar boycott

Jada Pinkett Smith said what I was thinking…

Jada Pinkett Smith made headlines when she stated that she would be boycotting the Academy Awards aka (The Oscars). This stemmed from the Oscar nominations that were released and not one black person was nominated…not one. In a status on Facebook Jada Pinkett Smith said this…

At the Oscars…people of color are always welcomed to give out awards…even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow.

With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment,

Jada Pinkett Smith said exactly what I have been thinking and feeling for so long. When hit show “Empire” which airs on FOX and stars our beloved actress Taraji P. Henson premiered it was black viewers that made “Cookie” a household name. When Mattel turned Director Ava DuVernay into a Barbie doll is was people of color who ran out to purchase the doll making it sell out in less than 72 hours. It was “Black Twitter” that made us take a look ask the question #WhatHappenedToSandraBland. We are the ones who are coming together to seek justice for our children who are slain due to police brutality with #BlackLivesMatter. It’s Black Women that are coming together to create lanes on social media where black women are celebrated using popular hashtags like #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackGirlsRock. We have power, so why are we still acting like we need to be accepted by companies, corporations, and award shows that only want us when they know they will make a profit?

The hit show Empire airs on FOX, the Ava DuVernay doll is sold to us from Mattel, black people are making other companies billions of dollars and we don’t see a dime of it. We keep begging to be acknowledged, we keep protesting and becoming upset when we hear stories of black people going into “high end” stores and being followed around, but we keep buying from them. Why do we keep allowing everyone else to put a price of worth on us? We have enough power to make whatever we want sell and have it become popular. We need to start acknowledging that one, we have an immense amount of power, and two, we don’t need to be invited to the party because we can create our own where we are appreciated and celebrated.
