Love Paid The Bills

Love Paid The Bills

I slowly put my pen and notebook back into my book bag.  I was taking my time because I wanted the other students in the class to leave so I could talk to the professor in private.  The professors back was turned, he was erasing the notes from the dry erase board.  “Excuse me professor I’m really struggling with grasping the concepts in this programming course and I need help.  The project you assigned is due in a few weeks and I don’t understand it.” The professor put down the eraser looked at me and said “Look the only way you’re going to pass this course is if you paid someone to take the class for you.” Defeat had instantly taken a hold of my body and my lips felt as if cement had paved them shut.  I was speechless and walked out of the classroom.

I hurried to the nearest bathroom and burst into tears. I pulled out my phone and called my mom. Usually I would greet my mother with a hello, but for this phone call hello seemed to escape me. Hello was replaced with sobs and tears. “Candice, what’s wrong?!” my mother said anxiously, “Candice please speak to me sweetheart, what happened?!” I took a deep breath and told her “I’m dropping my programming class mom, I can’t pass the class. I asked the professor for help and he told me the only way I would pass the class was if I paid someone to take it for me.”

There was a brief silence, and then my mom said “Candice you’re not dropping that class, and you will pass it. You will not run because that’s what he wants you to do. I didn’t raise you to run and quit. You are can do Candice and you can do anything you put your mind too. You will find a tutor and you will work with that tutor for as long as it takes, but you won’t drop this class. It’s going to be alright, you got this.”

My mom was right. I worked with a tutor and passed the class with a C+. When I was at a low point it didn’t matter how much money I had in my bank account. It didn’t matter how fat or skinny I was. It didn’t matter how beautiful I was. It didn’t matter what hairstyle I had. Love is what mattered, family is what mattered. Love is what pulled me through. The last few weeks I’ve been talking about the importance of taking control of your finances, and building wealth in preparation for my upcoming e-book (The Young Urban Investor’s available on www.youngyetwise.com 12/22/14). Yes building wealth is important, but it’s not everything. Love and family are everything.

“It’s not the same as having someone who will not leave. It’s not the same as having someone whom you know has an eye on you, and is watching you the whole time. This is part of what a family is about, not just love, but letting others know there’s someone who is watching out for them…nothing else will give you that. Not money. Not fame. Not work. ” Mitch Albom

Although I don’t come from a wealthy family money wise, I was rich because I had an abundance of love, and support. My mom busted her behind and made sure that we never had to go hungry and always had a place to sleep. Love didn’t physically pay the bills, but my mom loved us so much that she did everything she could to provide and pay the bills. My mom has one of the biggest hearts. I’m thankful for my mom and dad. I really couldn’t ask for better parents. I’m humbled that God chose them to be my teachers. They’ve instilled in me the value of hard work, and also have always encouraged me and made me feel as if anything was possible.   They’ve taught me to have faith, love, and compassion. Any dream I’ve ever had they’ve always been right there to support me and for that I am forever thankful.

Love is the motivation behind why I encourage people to take control of their finances, and to start building long-term wealth through investments. Since you love your family and want the best you don’t want to see them have to worry about money. Having love and family makes the bad times a little easier. So on your way to building wealth please don’t forget about love. Don’t lose yourself. Remember the bigger picture. Spend time with your family. Just being around someone you love even if you aren’t doing anything, it means everything.

With all my love,

Candice Marie
